the gluten dude blog
I started this blog in October of 2011. Why? I had a lot to say about living with celiac disease. And what I was mostly finding online did not align with my feelings and experiences of being gluten-free and dealing with the trials and tribulations of our fun little autoimmune disease. And while it took me a bit of time, I found my voice and an awesome community.
Over 780 blog posts and 36,000 comments later, while I may have slowed down my pace a bit, the journey continues. You can select a category or month below, use the search icon above or just browse around. Either way...enjoy and I hope it helps you in your journey.
First things first. If the above picture makes absolutely no sense, stop reading this immediately and go watch History of the World: Part 1. You’re welcome. So for those unaware, I’ve been working on an eBook for a few months now. The hope is […]
Read MoreMany studies have shown that being thankful leads to a happier life. And heck…who doesn’t want to be happier?? So I’ve recently started a new habit. Every day, I name three things I’m thankful for. Yes…they should be said out loud. No…they don’t all […]
Read MoreForgive me community for I have sinned. It has been 15 days since my last blog post. Definitely my longest stretch between posts. I even got this email yesterday: Gluten Dude. Did you get bored with your blog? Is it discontinued? Nothing recent has […]
Read MoreLet me just clarify what this is about right away. This is not about who makes the best gluten-free bread. It’s not just about the “horror” of the holes in Udi’s bread. That’s been discussed here and here. Yeah…I know there are much worse […]
Read MoreSo May 1 kicks off another celiac awareness month. I always get a little torn about this month. Too many in the community use it as a month to promote shitty gluten-free foods, which not only doesn’t help raise awareness, but also is not […]
Read MoreBack in the day, I worked in the restaurant industry for many years; mostly behind the bar but sometimes waiting tables as well. In all the years I worked, I cannot remember one time where someone had a food allergy and certainly nobody ever […]
Read MoreFor the past few years, we’ve gone to our friend’s house to celebrate Passover. It’s always a blast. Lots of food. Lots of wine. And lots of laughter. Just a great tradition. Even though I’m a (non-practicing) Catholic, it is still one of my […]
Read MoreIt ain’t easy being a celiac. And for restaurants, it ain’t easy to feed us. I get that. And I also get that any time we eat out, unless the restaurant is 100% gluten-free, we take a risk. It’s a risk I’m willing to […]
Read MoreFor those of you who follow me on Facebook (bless your little hearts), you knew I was having a procedure yesterday. For the rest of you…ummm…I was having a procedure yesterday. Now that we’re all on the same page, here’s how it all went […]
Read MoreI’ve been happily married to the one and only Mrs. Dude for 23 years now. We were already 15 years in when I got the dreaded celiac diagnosis. While obviously the diagnosis itself pretty much sucked, at least Mrs. Dude and I were able […]
Read MoreBeing a celiac means considering things that others don’t have to. It doesn’t mean living in fear, but it certainly means living in a state of heightened awareness. Take this fellow celiac’s dilemma: Hey Gluten Dude, I have to admit this isn’t how I […]
Read MoreAbout 20 years ago, when I was living in New York City as a struggling (doesn’t even begin to describe it) artist, I ate a chicken salad sandwich at a nearby diner. Tasted…ok. About 5 hours later, it hit me. Boy…did it hit me. […]
Read More“We’re in the middle of a slow, simmering epidemic.” – Dr. John Garber, Massachusetts General Hospital, speaking about celiac disease. Quite the interesting article about celiac disease on CNN.com today. And no…it’s not fake news! It’s a pretty long article so I’m not going […]
Read MoreIt’s six in the morning and I’ve been up for 4 hours already. Yeah…sleep has not been my friend lately. Before I go grab my 13th cup of coffee, let’s do a quick mailbag. Hey Dude! (You ROCK!!) I am your redheaded Celiac sister […]
Read MoreDude Note: The following article, written by yours truly, appears in the latest issue of Simply Gluten-Free magazine. It’s a good publication run by good people. You can subscribe here. Hey there my special Valentine. It’s me. Where do I even begin to describe […]
Read MoreI started this on Monday, so technically I can call it Monday Mailbag, which has better ring to it then Muesday Mailbag and will become I hope a regular, weekly feature on this site. Anyway…I get emails. Lots and lots of emails. Happy to […]
Read MoreWhen I went to journalism school (#alternativefact), I was taught to open an article with a question, draw the audience in, discuss my thoughts, and then at the end of the article, answer the question. But I’m going to reverse that school of thought […]
Read MoreIt’s no secret that I am not a fan of celiac bloggers who are essentially brand whores. Who get paid to constantly, and I mean constantly, promote products that may or may not have a celiac’s health in their best interest. To me, the […]
Read MoreWell this is ugly. The Spectator magazine, around since 1828 with a paid circulation of 72,000 and a popular website, recently ran an article by one Melissa Kite titled “The dietary obnoxiousness of the Catholic Church”, with a lovely byline that reads “Gluten-free Eucharist? […]
Read MoreIn 2007, I was sick for pretty much the full year. Lost 15 pounds on an already slim frame. I (finally) went to the doctor and the very first thing I was tested for was celiac disease. It came back positive and an endoscopy […]
Read MoreWho I am. And who I'm not.
I AM someone who's been gluten-free since 2007 due to a diagnosis of severe celiac disease. I'm someone who can steer you in the right direction when it comes to going gluten-free. And I'm someone who will always give you the naked truth about going gluten free.
I AM NOT someone who embraces this gluten-free craziness. I didn’t find freedom, a better life or any of that other crap when I got diagnosed. With all due respect to Hunter S. Thompson, I found fear and loathing of an unknown world. But if I can share my wisdom, tell my stories and make the transition easier on you, I’ve done my job.
Send me a message
I'm all ears
