the gluten dude blog
I started this blog in October of 2011. Why? I had a lot to say about living with celiac disease. And what I was mostly finding online did not align with my feelings and experiences of being gluten-free and dealing with the trials and tribulations of our fun little autoimmune disease. And while it took me a bit of time, I found my voice and an awesome community.
Over 780 blog posts and 36,000 comments later, while I may have slowed down my pace a bit, the journey continues. You can select a category or month below, use the search icon above or just browse around. Either way...enjoy and I hope it helps you in your journey.
Bubble wrap is my new best friend. You will all be happy to know that both me and my New Grist beer survived a van ride, a plane ride, a cab ride and a ferry ride. By the way, many thanks to the Continental […]
Read MoreThat’s right. The Gluten Dude is taking a vacation! (Put away your tears…I’ll still be posting while I’m away.) That’s the good news. The other side of the coin is that it’s my first real vacation since I was diagnosed with celiac disease. And […]
Read MoreThe good thing about the internet is that anybody can have a voice. The really bad thing about the internet is that anybody can have a voice. There’s an old axiom that says “I read it on the internet, so it must be true.” […]
Read MoreGluten free is all the rage these days. Hollywood has embraced it (gag). Companies are plastering “gluten free” all over their products, even if they have always been gluten free. So called “experts” are comparing it to the South Beach Diet. As somebody with […]
Read MoreI love surprises. There are so few of them now in life. When the phone rings, you know who it is already. When a movie comes out, you’ve already seen half of it in trailers. I remember when Mrs. Dude was pregnant with my […]
Read MoreI just received an email from a follower (don’t laugh…I have followers!) that reinforces why I started this blog. Here is part of what he said: My wife is a celiac diagnosed about 2.5 months now. She really truly feels better reading your entries […]
Read MoreDear last night’s waiter: I’m gluten-free…but with all due respect, you’re an asshole. I understand you were busy last night. And i understand it was a Saturday night. And I understand that you want to turn as many tables as possible in the course […]
Read MoreSo just how sad is the above picture? On the left is a “normal” dessert. A chocolate cake with vanilla frosting. Healthy? On Planet Fat perhaps. But still, looks disgustingly amazing. On the right is my gluten-free dessert. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I’m not complaining mind you. […]
Read MoreJust a quick and easy post today. We’re all busy prepping for the kickoff of the holiday season tomorrow. Just don’t get too caught up in the festivities, especially if you’ve got celiac disease. Dangers lurk everywhere. 1. Don’t overeat. I don’t care if […]
Read MoreI’m a glass half-full kind of guy. While I may bitch and moan about celiac disease, there are many reasons to be thankful. As the holiday approaches, this is as good a time as any to mention them. It is a treatable disease. No […]
Read MoreSomebody posted this video on Twitter yesterday and I must have watched it 10 times already. It speaks volumes not only to the difficulty of having celiac disease, but to the stigmatism sometimes attached to it. (If you can’t see the above video, here […]
Read More“I can’t have that??” has now been replaced in my vocabulary with “I don’t want that” and man does it feel good. I heard these phrases written by one of my fellow tweeters (@Paleo_Nosh) and it really resonated with me. It is a complete […]
Read MoreIn honor of today being Mrs. Gluten Dude’s birthday, I thought I’d write about the importance of spousal support for those with celiac disease. I belong to several celiac forums and help people out where I can. I cannot tell you the number of […]
Read MoreCeliac Disease is Frustrating Just when you start to feel better, something seems to inevitably happen to bring you back down. And most of the time, you have no idea what it was. Celiac Disease is Healthy Because you can’t eat gluten, it removes […]
Read MoreIt’s such a simple question, isn’t it? You would think that something either has gluten or it doesn’t have gluten and people with celiac disease wouldn’t need to jump through hoops every time they want to eat something…or drink something…or use a new toothpaste…or […]
Read MoreNo…it’s not what you think. There will be no OCS (occupy celiac street???). But with celiac disease affecting just a little less than 1% of the population, I think it’s time to give a little love and attention to our plight. We are not […]
Read MoreIn a word? UGLY. A little background first for those new to the blog. I got diagnosed about four years ago with severe celiac disease. On day 1 of my diagnosis, I went gluten-free and never looked back. Actually, that’s not true. I looked […]
Read MoreOne of those celiac days where keeping my chin off my chest takes herculean strength. Trying…to…stay…awake…to…complete…this…post. This type of day goes like this: Wake up, coffee and ipad, two hour nap, one hour of work, one hour nap, lunch, two hour nap, stare at […]
Read MoreAs I’ve discovered over the years since I was diagnosed with celiac disease, it is not just what I eat that affects me, but also HOW I eat. I’ve always been somewhat of a shoveler when it comes to eating. Perhaps it comes from […]
Read MoreUpdate on 11/22/11: Amy’s Kitchen has graciously responded to the following post. See the comments section below the post. This is not going to be an anti-Amy’s post. Honestly, it’s not. This is really more about the FDA than anything else, but I am […]
Read MoreWho I am. And who I'm not.
I AM someone who's been gluten-free since 2007 due to a diagnosis of severe celiac disease. I'm someone who can steer you in the right direction when it comes to going gluten-free. And I'm someone who will always give you the naked truth about going gluten free.
I AM NOT someone who embraces this gluten-free craziness. I didn’t find freedom, a better life or any of that other crap when I got diagnosed. With all due respect to Hunter S. Thompson, I found fear and loathing of an unknown world. But if I can share my wisdom, tell my stories and make the transition easier on you, I’ve done my job.
Send me a message
I'm all ears
