This Gluten Free Love Story was lovingly submitted by Diana
When I was going through all my testing and coming up with an answer, I was dating a guy who I realized in the end, drove me nuts, and was not going to be a good fit to spend the rest of my life with!!
I had an eye twitch because he made me so nutty with his immature nature and his lack of understanding what it meant to be gluten free. I kept thinking, is there a way to find someone who won’t think I’m nuts for being gluten intolerant?
Right after being diagnosed, he made us a romantic dinner…with a Lipton Noodle dish, green bean casserole made with Campbell’s soup and a pork roast. I did my best to not cry and decided I couldn’t deal with him anymore. (The eye twitch stopped after we broke up.)
About 2 weeks later, a long time friend came up to me and told me “Don’t worry about being gluten free, there are cupcakes for that!”
I thought he was joking but he gave me a menu to a bakery near where he lives that does Gluten Free Cupcakes (Swirls bakery in Chicago). I was in heaven. He told me to circle my favorite flavors from their daily offerings and he’d go get some.
I was so touched!
Soon after that, he asked if I liked Tiramisu and Chicken Parm and that there was a highly rated gluten free restaurant nearby and that we should get dinner some time. Then he told me about a great place up in Milwaukee, WI, that is near the art museum that has gluten free hamburger buns and we can check out the museum while up there.
The whole thing made me feel like a princess. Not only did he understand gluten free, but he also went out of his way to find something for me; and he’s not gluten free himself.
He told me later that he’d liked me for a while, but didn’t know how to “stand out” and make a good impression and he realized this was his chance.
Two years later, we’re still going strong, and he’s still looking for new places to try when we go out with friends, foods to make and gluten free beers.
All the things that make me feel normal.
That is the sweetest story. and cupcakes do make people happy! I am a believer!
This is such a beautiful story! It’s very hard to find a person who understand what a gluten free person goes through. Especially one who helps you through it.
I love your story! I have a fella like that too. I think he is so happy I feel good, he’d do anything to keep it that way.
Yaay for cupcakes and yaay for love!!!
He sounds like a real sweetheart! (I know, I have one of those, too.)
Lucky us. 🙂
Its so wonderful to see that someone gets it! That comment about “there are cupcakes for that”. That would have hooked me right on the spot. My boyfriend is nice that way too. He won’t eat any toast or bread before he picks me up and he brushes his teeth before a kiss. Its so wonderful when someone has it together for us Celiac folks. Great story! It made my day!
Like the Jerry Maguire movie only,
“You had me at cupcake!”
What a great story! My wife did something similar, only it was my first beer ever for my forty-fifth birthday.
What a sweet story! My only question…does he have a brother?? 🙂
Even tho you don’t get as many comments on these stories, we really like them!
Perhaps if the guy had said , ” there are pills for that! ” you would get more comments? 🙂
What a sweet story! It put a smile on my face.
