How to Donate Gluten-Free Food to Houston

donate-gluten-free-food

The celiac community, like many communities out there, has come together to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey. If you’d like to help by sending gluten-free food down to those in Houston are who are in need, please read the following email conversation between myself and Susan Daniels from the Houston ROCK Group.

Susan:

Hi Gluten Dude,

I am in Houston, and my son, who is about to turn 8, has celiac disease. I am part of the Houston ROCK group (Raising our Celiac Kids). If anyone you know in the celiac community wants to send safe GF treats to the Houston kids to cheer them up as we recover from Harvey, I can coordinate getting them out to the neighborhoods. My house didn’t flood, thank goodness, but my mom’s did and I am helping her recover her things. Some grocery stores are stocking back up, but it is hit or miss depending on the neighborhood. I’m sure you can imagine. Let me know if you know anyone interested in helping out.

Thanks,
Susan

Me:

Thank you so much Susan. What should I tell the community specifically?

Susan:

Thanks, Gluten Dude.

The Houston ROCK group has approximately 40 kids, ranging from toddlers to teenagers. They are spread out all over Houston and surrounding suburbs. School has started back up already for some kids, but for the Houston ISD it starts Tuesday 9/11. Houston ISD will be providing 3 meals a day for all students because of Harvey, but of course their food is not GF. Parents will be trying to pack lunches for their kids. I would think the most helpful things would be:

  • Bread for making sandwiches.
  • Cookies/brownies or any treats.
  • Nutritious GF items for school lunches that don’t need to be cooked for those who don’t have electricity, are living in a house with the drywall ripped out, or are in a shelter.

Of course, items would need to be safe for kids with celiac disease. If there are any leftovers I can share with our Houston Celiac Support Group, which is a group of adults with celiac disease and gluten intolerance.

I have a mailbox at a UPS store that didn’t flood, and they will hold packages for me in an air conditioned place. The name is under my first name, Isadora. I go by my middle name, Susan.

Thank you,
Susan

So there you have it folks. Whatever you can do would be most appreciated. And THANK YOU SUSAN.

(And now we brace for Hurricane Irma.)

  1. I am so happy you posted this information. I was told by a reader that the Houston ROCK no longer existed and when I tried to find them online I kept getting a dead end.

Who I am. And who I'm not.

Who I am. And who I'm not.

I AM someone who's been gluten-free since 2007 due to a diagnosis of severe celiac disease. I'm someone who can steer you in the right direction when it comes to going gluten-free. And I'm someone who will always give you the naked truth about going gluten free.

I AM NOT someone who embraces this gluten-free craziness. I didn’t find freedom, a better life or any of that other crap when I got diagnosed. With all due respect to Hunter S. Thompson, I found fear and loathing of an unknown world. But if I can share my wisdom, tell my stories and make the transition easier on you, I’ve done my job.
