The celiac’s business lunch dilemma

October 10, 2011 | 4 Comments

I am not embarrassed to have celiac disease. Frustrated? You have no idea. But embarrassed? Not at all. But when a prospective client wants to meet with you and asks you to meet him at an Italian restaurant, it poses a bit of a […]

Dear Dairy…

October 9, 2011 | 6 Comments

See what I did there? Instead of Dear Diary, I cleverly inverted the two letters? I know…you don’t have to say it. Dear Dairy…it’s been a great run. When I was a child, my 3 brothers and I would polish off a gallon of […]

No Grain. No Pain. No Deal.

October 8, 2011 | 9 Comments

See the above tattoo?  That’s my left arm.  If you can’t read it, it says “No Grain. No Pain.” I got it about a year after I was diagnosed with this aggravating disease. I figured if I’m going to mar my body for life, […]

Gluten Free Halloween Candy

October 6, 2011 | 3 Comments

As an adult, celiac disease is hard enough. I can’t even imagine being stuck with this life-long disease as a child. The cupcakes at school. The pizza parties. The freedom of eating whatever you want. Being gluten free is tough now. It must suck […]

Just diagnosed with Celiac? Avoid these mistakes.

October 5, 2011 | 17 Comments

Buying processed, ready-made gluten free meals. When I first got diagnosed with Celiac, we beelined to Wegmans, found the gluten-free aisle, and pretty much bought out the store. Pizzas, frozen foods, etc. Being overwhelmed, this seemed the simplest thing to do. But guess what? To […]

Gluten free beer. Is there any hope?

October 4, 2011 | 11 Comments

Before I got diagnosed with Celiac disease, I was an admitted total beer snob. Loved the microbrews. Hated the cheap, mass produced, over advertised, tastes like water…well, you get my point. I still wish I had some inkling of my diagnosis beforehand and I […]

Gluten and the FDA. What’s taking so long?

October 3, 2011 | 2 Comments

In 2007, the FDA was given the responsibility to standardize gluten-free labeling. That’s right…2007. Right now, pretty much anybody can stick a “gluten-free” label on their packaging without proving it. For someone like me, who is sick for months from the slightest bit of […]

October 1, 2011 | 4 Comments

I do not like having celiac disease, but my kids, god bless them, wrote my a list of the bright side of having the disease: 1. You feel better. 2. You eat healthier. 3. You introduce new foods to everyone that we never knew […]

Who I am. And who I'm not.

Who I am. And who I'm not.

I AM someone who's been gluten-free since 2007 due to a diagnosis of severe celiac disease. I'm someone who can steer you in the right direction when it comes to going gluten-free. And I'm someone who will always give you the naked truth about going gluten free.

I AM NOT someone who embraces this gluten-free craziness. I didn’t find freedom, a better life or any of that other crap when I got diagnosed. With all due respect to Hunter S. Thompson, I found fear and loathing of an unknown world. But if I can share my wisdom, tell my stories and make the transition easier on you, I’ve done my job.
