the gluten dude blog
I started this blog in October of 2011. Why? I had a lot to say about living with celiac disease. And what I was mostly finding online did not align with my feelings and experiences of being gluten-free and dealing with the trials and tribulations of our fun little autoimmune disease. And while it took me a bit of time, I found my voice and an awesome community.
Over 780 blog posts and 36,000 comments later, while I may have slowed down my pace a bit, the journey continues. You can select a category or month below, use the search icon above or just browse around. Either way...enjoy and I hope it helps you in your journey.
“There is no doubt that it is around the family and the home that all the greatest virtues, the most dominating virtues of humans, are created, strengthened and maintained.” – Winston Churchill I am doubly blessed when it comes to family life. I was […]
Read MoreI am always impressed/amazed at people who want to sign up with the military to defend our country, putting themselves at risk to serve the greater good. There is no bigger sacrifice. And with our country’s dubious history of getting involved or starting wars […]
Read MoreBig things are happening with Jennifer Esposito and her company, Jennifer’s Way. Big things for her and just as importantly, big things for the celiac community. Many of these things are of the “to be announced” variety, but there is one item I do […]
Read MoreWe don’t owe anybody any explanation of why we eat gluten-free. It’s our life. It’s our body. It’s our health. It’s what we do to thrive and survive. Yet with the fad diet in full force, I know some in our community feel the […]
Read MoreI’m not gonna rant about this one. (Dude note: If you can’t see the picture above, click here.) I really try to balance the pulse of this blog so I don’t come across as a complainer; though lord knows there’s enough to kvetch about […]
Read MoreIt never ends. It seriously never ends. The constant ignorance out there and the constant need to defend ourselves about our disease and other food intolerances. What set me off this time? An utterly ridiculous article on Huff Post titled “Why Do Your Kid’s […]
Read MoreBeen sick as a dog for a few days now, it’s 3:30am, my mind is racing, and I can’t sleep. Let’s do a stream of consciousness blog. 1. Why do they say “sick as a dog”? My dogs are never sick. 2. It’s snowing […]
Read MoreTo all restaurants marketing and offering gluten-free dishes: – Either you offer gluten-free or you do not. – Either you care about the health of your customers or you do not. – Either you take the time to truly learn what it means to […]
Read MoreDear Gluten Free Food Companies, I am touched by your desire to have me sample your products. Honestly I am. I think it’s totally cool you want to send me free food. I mean “free” and “food” are two of my favorite things. And […]
Read MoreSorry for the delay folks. We’ve been in polar vortex hell. The last ice storm knocked out power out for 5 days. It got to 38 degrees INSIDE the Dude Ranch. Grateful for friends and family for the hot food, cold beer and warm […]
Read MoreI love this. I really, really love this. It’s a celiac rant with a positive spin. Because our disease is connected to food, it’s the food that tends to get all of the focus. Food is sexy I guess; disease…not so much. But the […]
Read MoreJust when I think this crappy disease can’t get any crappier…I get an email like the one below. This mom reached out to me because her soon to be 14-year-old son is depressed. You see…he has celiac disease and whenever he gets glutened, he […]
Read MoreHere’s a question for you: How much responsibility does the media bear in promoting celiac awareness? Maybe “promoting celiac awareness” is the wrong terminology. Maybe it should be “how much responsibility does the media bear in connecting gluten-free to a serious health issue?” Gluten-free […]
Read MoreThe below comment was left on my blog post about children with chronic health issues a few weeks ago. I was stunned and I reached out directly to the woman who wrote the comment. I told her how sorry I was and asked if […]
Read MoreHoly crap am I behind on emails. I’ve got emails from my fellow celiacs sitting in my inbox dating back to October. Yes…October of 2013 wise-ass. Between work, the blog, life, holidays, etc., I’m not always finding the time to keep up with my […]
Read MoreI feel lucky to have celiac disease. Let me rephrase that. I feel lucky to actually have the diagnosis of celiac disease. I get emails like the one below all the time. They come from people who have all of the celiac symptoms, but […]

Read MoreWho I am. And who I'm not.
I AM someone who's been gluten-free since 2007 due to a diagnosis of severe celiac disease. I'm someone who can steer you in the right direction when it comes to going gluten-free. And I'm someone who will always give you the naked truth about going gluten free.
I AM NOT someone who embraces this gluten-free craziness. I didn’t find freedom, a better life or any of that other crap when I got diagnosed. With all due respect to Hunter S. Thompson, I found fear and loathing of an unknown world. But if I can share my wisdom, tell my stories and make the transition easier on you, I’ve done my job.
Send me a message
I'm all ears
