How to Pack for a Gluten-Free Vacation

pack-gluten-free-vacation

This may be the most important post I will ever write so take heed and listen closely…

Going on vacation is awesome.

Going on vacation if you’re a celiac…is still awesome.

But there is an added level of stress involved for us, knowing that we need to bring enough gluten-free food to stay healthy for the week. We can’t always count on the restaurants to take care of us.

Luckily for you, it’s the Dude to the rescue.

Packing for a gluten-free vacation is not nearly as hard as you think it may be.

As a matter of fact, it can be done in 3 simple steps.

Just follow these instructions and you are guaranteed a safe, healthy and really fun vacation.

STEP 1
Purchase bubble wrap.

STEP 2
Purchase New Planet Beer

STEP 3
Wrap each bottle of New Planet Beer in bubble wrap and place strategically in a separate suitcase. Check your suitcase at the airport and make sure they mark it FRAGILE.

That’s it my friends. You are now guaranteed a safe vacation.

And if you’re wondering whether it will make it thru the rigors of travel, here’s proof that it does indeed:

Oh…and not that the process needs a STEP 4, but just in case, here it is.

  1. Haahaahaahaa, I Love it!! I was the ultimate beer drinking, football watching, red neck gal. Then I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. OH HELL NO. is what I thought. But three years later, I still enjoy it all, and I have become a pretty damn good Gluten Free cook and baker, my grown boys are my inspiration. Thank you!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. First words out of my mouth when I got my diagnosis?

“I can’t have Celiac Disease! I LOVE BEER!?!?!”

Thank goodness bubble wrap is gluten free. I don’t know what I would replace that with that could bring the same amount of satisfaction.

  2. You.Are.My.HERO!

Sometimes making light is good… but thank you for this informative and serious article on how to vacation gluten free. This is a handy post that I will surely revisit to make sure that I, too, can vacation safely gluten free!

    ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. Hahaha hahaha hahaha

Now get on with your holiday ๐Ÿ™‚

Seriously, have a fantastic time, and we can sleep easy knowing you are having a good time x

  4. I couldn’t be more proud of you than I am right now. (sniff, sniff)

You should being feeling about as relaxed as Gumby right about now.

    Enjoy, my friend.

    “Clink” Cheers!

  5. Hey Dude, I just bought two “four packs” of this kind of gf beer. Actually, I bought it long before Thanksgiving! I HAVE NOT tried it yet. Is it good???? As a matter of fact I haven’t even put it in the fridge yet!!!!

    1. It’s good if you like IPAs and hoppy beers. To me, it does a better job of tasting like a real beer than most GF beers – but if you don’t like hops, it might not be your thing.

  6. That’s awesome! The Off Grid Pale Ale is one of the best gluten free beers out there.

    You forgot Step 5, though:

“While on vacation, search out and sample any new gluten free beers you haven’t had before. If any good ones are available, carefully pack and take home with you for later enjoyment.”

Did this last two times I traveled – from Portland, OR, I brought back two cases of Harvester Beer (IPA, Red Ale & Dark Ale). They come in giant bottles, so we got wine-packing boxes and took them home as checked luggage. Worked great – and their beer is delicious!

From New York, I brought back Celia beer, which is made in Vermont and tastes a lot like a Blue Moon. I’ve got a trip to Colorado coming up this winter, so I’ll be researching ahead of time to see if there’s anything worth trying (besides, of course, New Planet). Can’t wait!

  7. โ€œMy advice to you… is to start drinking heavily.โ€ – Animal House

โ€œWell ya see, Norm, it’s like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That’s why you always feel smarter after a few beers.โ€ – Cliff Clavin from Cheers

    GD,have 10 for me.

    1. JG (you doll) …quoted one of the most “unrecognized” wise men ever ๐Ÿ™‚

“Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first.”

This, in essence, is much like Darwin’s Survival of the Fittest.

See. Now, this makes sense to me!
This Bostonian agrees with Cliff Claven.

In fact, I tended BAH in Bahston in the 80’s (during grad school) and I MET and served several Cliffy Clavens.

…and this rationale explains…..why I am So. Dahn. SMAHT.

  8. Looks like you are having a great vacation!! Enjoy, drink, be merry, drink some more, sleep on the beach with the sand between your toes! safest “sandwich” in the world!

PS: thanks for all the reality checks and tips. You deserve a nice rest!

  9. Favorite thing about vacation: Searching for new gluten free beers and ciders. I live in a small town and the pickings are slim (non-existent) so I take advantage of the big city stores when I can. This is my suitcase on the way home. haha!

  10. I thought we were going to have to go a whole week without a post but instead you’re here with the best travel tip ever! I just love New Planet and there’s nothing like an ice cold beer while on vacation. Enjoy your trip!

  11. I think gluten free “beer” is like gluten free bread….you learn to like it and adjust. I loved beer! All types….aaa those were the days…I call them my eating years ๐Ÿ™‚ ha ha….I’ve tried many gf beers and this is one of the best. However, sometimes when I try a gf beer, I think they should just call it a gluten free alcoholic beverage instead of beer. Enjoy your vacation!

  12. I love it! Although living in Utah, as I do (with a grand total of 3 types of GF beer available in the entire state), it’s almost always a better bet to buy beer at my destination!

  13. LOL! I was thinking of traveling for gf beer…..not just bringing it while I travel!
I sampled a really good gf beer at a GF Expo a few months ago. It was called brasseurs sans gluten / glutenberg I think. They are out of Montreal….. However the only thing keeping me from jumping the border is that he told me that sometime in January they are coming to a whole foods in MA. I don’t care which whole foods! I’m there!!!

  14. I just read all your posts, THANK YOU! for reading my mind and don’t get me started on “gluten free oats” no such thing.
thanks for the new beers to try, one beer snob to another. My husband is a beer snob home brewer and is working on a dark gluten free Ale for me, it has to pass the “delicious” test, the 1st one was skunk water yuck.
staying healthy and gf for 22 years.

Who I am. And who I'm not.

Who I am. And who I'm not.

I AM someone who's been gluten-free since 2007 due to a diagnosis of severe celiac disease. I'm someone who can steer you in the right direction when it comes to going gluten-free. And I'm someone who will always give you the naked truth about going gluten free.

I AM NOT someone who embraces this gluten-free craziness. I didnโ€™t find freedom, a better life or any of that other crap when I got diagnosed. With all due respect to Hunter S. Thompson, I found fear and loathing of an unknown world. But if I can share my wisdom, tell my stories and make the transition easier on you, Iโ€™ve done my job.
