The Truth About Gluten

Dude Note: To honor Celiac Awareness Month and to help raise awareness of our disease, I will be attempting 31 blog posts in 31 days. My goal is simple: to make most of them not suck. If you’ve got ideas for a good post or if you’d like to guest blog, by all means, contact me. Your input is more than welcome. And if you know anybody with celiac disease, give them some extra lovin’ this month. They deserve it.

So what does a blogger do when they worked a 16 hour day and then watched hockey until midnight and didn’t plan anything for the next day’s blog?

Why they link to someone else’s work of course 🙂

The above video is called “The Truth About Gluten” and it’s by Joy Bauer, the resident nutrition expert for NBC’s Today show.

Finally…somebody in the media gets it.

She lays it out real straight and the video itself is pretty entertaining.

Of course, it would have been nice if SHE was interviewed about celiac disease on last week’s Today show instead of the other “doctor” who refuses to answer my emails and tweets, and then we could have avoided this disaster.

But I digress.

Some video highlights:

– Gluten has been in our food supply for thousands of years but going gluten free is a new trend.

– Gluten has some very good qualities.

– Many gluten free items are worse for you than their gluten-free counterparts.

– Unless you have celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity, there is really no reason to eliminate gluten from your diet.

– Don’t fall prey to the gluten free junk that’s pretty much everywhere these days.

Thanks Joy for telling the truth about gluten.

  1. Great video!
I actually did finally get a response from Dr. Keri Peterson, the doctor who said that Celiac Disease was “trendy” on the Today Show. I got her response about 2-3 days ago on her Facebook site:

    Dear Rachel,
It’s been some time since I checked my facebook page or twitter. I have read your comments and wanted to address them directly with you. I can see that you are very frustrated about Celiac being misrepresented. I want you to know that my reference to Celiac being trendy was in reference to it being a popular topic in the media. My wording did not convey that message well. Using the media as a platform to educate others so that they recognize how to identify their own symptoms and be properly diagnosed is my primary goal. My dear family friend suffered for many years until I diagnosed her two years ago and her quality of life has greatly improved since then, so I do have some insight into how Celiac may have impacted your life. I hope you are managing it well and I appreciate your passion for raising awareness.
    Sincerely,
    Keri Peterson

As you might remember, I wrote some pretty in-your-face and accusatory remarks on her FB page. Well, I apologized to her about the harshness of the first one. I then received this reply. So sometimes the squeaky wheel gets the grease, so to say…

    1. Skeptically, I wonder how long her friend was her patient before Celiac was the diagnosis…if it was overlooked for yrs (ok, a little bitter here, I was told I had IBS for 15 years before my new doctors ran a Celiac panel) or if it was just run as part of routine bloodwork during an initial visit (boy, wouldn’t that be a dream!)

Congrats on getting a reply. Yes, the squeaky wheel does sometimes get the grease 🙂

      1. Yes, I wonder that myself. Well, I think that this doctor may have just used bad wording when referring to our condition as a “trendy” and “hot new disease.” People sometimes don’t say things in the most tactful ways and then regret what they say later. I know I say things that I regret later. I give her the benefit of the doubt. However, I really wish that she would apologize to the Celiac community as a whole and admit that she had misspoken.

Who I am. And who I'm not.

Who I am. And who I'm not.

I AM someone who's been gluten-free since 2007 due to a diagnosis of severe celiac disease. I'm someone who can steer you in the right direction when it comes to going gluten-free. And I'm someone who will always give you the naked truth about going gluten free.

I AM NOT someone who embraces this gluten-free craziness. I didn’t find freedom, a better life or any of that other crap when I got diagnosed. With all due respect to Hunter S. Thompson, I found fear and loathing of an unknown world. But if I can share my wisdom, tell my stories and make the transition easier on you, I’ve done my job.
