Video: My Book, Friends, Tequila and Gluten-free Beer

video about book on celiac disease

So I kinda suck at self-promotion. When I was a kid, I had zero self-esteem. I mean…get rid of ALL of the self-esteem in the world, and that’s how much I had.

“Why is Scott always so quiet?” “Why is Scott so shy?”

Little did they know I had so much to say…I just lacked the confidence to say it. As always…I’m a work in progress.

Which leads me to the book I wrote last year, “From Crappy to Happy: The Naked Truth about Living with Celiac Disease“. A year ago, my friend David asked if I wanted to do a video to promote my book before the holidays. “Low self-esteem Scott” wasn’t too fond of the idea, but “throw caution to the wind Scott” was totally up for it.

It turns out I really like “throw caution to the wind Scott”. I had a blast doing it and even though it actually took me a year to post the dang thing, I will be doing a lot more videos moving forward. Stay tuned.

In the video, we talk everything celiac-related: family support, eating out, reading labels, avoiding replacement foods, and more. With a lot of silliness and snarkiness thrown in for good measure. And yes…all while sipping tequila and gluten-free beer. A good time was had by all.

And now a little book-pimping time. It’s a good book. It’s helped a lot of people and it can help you and/or your loved ones and it would make a great little stocking-stuffer. And it’s not just me saying this. The other day, a fellow celiac posted the following on her Instagram.

Are you having a challenging time with loved ones and your celiac disease? Is it creating a wrench in your relationships? Do you wish that others just knew what you’re going through? Everyday can be a challenging day for someone with celiac disease and it becomes that much more difficult during the holidays. You’re not alone and even though those around you don’t understand your struggle, perhaps it’s time they did!

It’s time our day-to-day got easier. It’s time our support system got stronger. It’s time we stopped standing alone. It’s time we stopped being afraid in our own home. It’s time we got the understanding from our loved ones. It’s time for more awareness.

The best thing I did for me and my family’s sake was buy Gluten Dude’s book. I remember reading it with tears falling down my cheeks. I remember stopping at not one but three different parts because I couldn’t keep my emotions under wraps. This book was my story and because I had trouble telling my story to my family, I gave them this book.

Did all of them read it? No. But, the matriarch of the family, my mother, read it and she made sure that the rest of the family woke up and became aware of my new lifestyle. Till this day – she attributes this book to be the saving Grace.

After this, everything became easier. My relationships with my family members and even my explanations of my own disease became stronger and more defined. If it weren’t for this book, I’d still be struggling with my own emotions and relationships.

If you’re struggling with CD and your relationships – I’d highly suggest Gluten Dude’s book.

Very cool…and exactly why I wrote the book.

I hope you enjoyed, and you’ll be hearing a lot more from “throw caution to the wind Scott” in 2019.

  1. Hey, Scott, (glad you came out, btw)

That video was fun to watch and listen to. Glad you’re getting back in the game. Looking forward to future efforts.

  2. Hi Gluten Dude,

I wish I had your book when I was first diagnosed in 2017 or knew about your blog. I am half way through the book and I wish I could express this better – but I LOVE it. I cried a little bit when I read the first few chapters – I am not crazy and not alone! You said exactly what I have been feeling and thinking this whole time. Thank you, thank you for putting it down on paper. This is the most truthful, funny and real book I’ve read about living with Celiac disease. I will be buying copies of your book for my Celiac friends and family! Thank you for not sugar-coating the truth. And please write another book!

    1. Depends on my budget at the time. The best tequila for the money hands down is Espolon Reposado. Under $30. Every once in a while I’ll splurge and buy Casamisgos Reposado or some other similar priced brand. Just sip and enjoy.

Who I am. And who I'm not.

Who I am. And who I'm not.

I AM someone who's been gluten-free since 2007 due to a diagnosis of severe celiac disease. I'm someone who can steer you in the right direction when it comes to going gluten-free. And I'm someone who will always give you the naked truth about going gluten free.

I AM NOT someone who embraces this gluten-free craziness. I didn’t find freedom, a better life or any of that other crap when I got diagnosed. With all due respect to Hunter S. Thompson, I found fear and loathing of an unknown world. But if I can share my wisdom, tell my stories and make the transition easier on you, I’ve done my job.
