How are options there both in terms of GF options in restaurants and grocery stores? Are restaurants aware of cross-contamination issues? That can be a big problem in some Canada/U.S. cities.
Always liked Trinidad and Tobago from a distance – friendly people for sure! Someday, would love to visit!

Restaurants are still very much a problem. Its been a slow but steady education in many cases. Eating at home has become the norm for me and regrettably eating out has become a game of roulette. My family, especially my husband, has become amazing GF chefs – just so I don’t get bored with my own cooking!! hahahaha>
I am doing my part to educate the public – via visiting restaurants as well as a Facebook page. But I still get the croutons in the salad bit occasionally!! :(
Trinibagonians (Trinidadians and Tobagonians!) are great people. I am a Canadian by birth but my family are Trinis – I chose to live here 25 years ago and have no regrets. Carnival is an awesome experience but we have a great time all year round. There is always something going on to keep us busy and “Liming” (Trini slang for partying or getting together with friends!)
Maybe one day you can visit and see for your self.

I’ve been gluten free for 5 years now. Eating out is always an issue but there are a lot more gluten free products available in supermarkets and gourmet stores in Trinidad and Tobago. They are very expensive though. But if you are really in need of bread, other baked goods, etc, they are available. There has been an increase of home bakers who also eat gluten free and sell gluten free products. Most of time when I eat out, I usually go to a Sushi restaurant and eat really simple sushi. There is one restaurant called Kaizan that actually knew what gluten free meant and made sure to prepare my sushi on a clean surface. I also have a habit now, where I never leave my house without snacks in my bag. The public knowledge is not that great about Celiac Disease. People see the gluten free products in the stores but most of them think they are new weight loss products which is unfortunate.
The only country that I had visited since my diagnosis was to the Dominican Republic and I actually managed to eat more food there than at home. I’ll be posting about that experience sometime on my blog (www.glutenfreetrini.com).

The weather is a bit different than here, especially in winter!
Yeah, I haven’t travelled at all since diagnosis, partially because my health still isn’t great (celiac isn’t my only issue, airborne allergies and chemical sensitivities are bigger issues yet for me), partially because of the difficulty of eating out. Cooking in a hotel room wouldn’t be an enjoyable vacation for me, that the monotony I’m looking to leave behind! Once I get feeling better, I’ll probably start out with a short trip to Montreal or Ottawa, where there’s some all-GF restaurants, that’ll make it easier – eventually I’ll work my way up to Trinidad & Tobago! :)
