Just wondering if there are any Celiacs in Peoria, IL? Am I the only one that feels like our choices are very limited here? I have to admit the grocery stores are getting better (I frequent Kroger, Hyvee & Costco) but it feels like Peoria is very under-educated on the seriousness of eating gluten-free for Celiacs. Any thoughts?
I’m not too far away in Bloomington, IL and I completely agree. I’m originally from Metamora and I frequent Peoria often to visit friends and family. It’s truly sad when you get an eye while trying to explain your diagnosis and dietary needs to wait staff. There are many national chains where I’ve read rave Celiac reviews, that have glutened me locally. I agree the majority of the populations is very under-educated in our area.
Your right though the grocery stores are getting much better. I frequent Kroger, Hyvee, Meijer, and Jewel Osco, which seems to have great gluten free choices.
My go to Bloomington spots currently are Outback Steakhouse and Biaggi’s (they are certified with a separate gluten free kitchen). There’s also a dedicated gluten free and vegan restaurant in Bloomington called “Take a Bite”. Their bakery goods are delicious and you can get a skillet cookie (a personal favorite of mine). Other than that, I have been glutened eating out in Bloomington and Peoria more times than I can count.
Jess0548 I don’t know why the Peoria/Bloomington area seems to be so behind the curve! Celiac/Gluten Free is here to stay, with more and more people discovering they have gluten-intolerance or Celiac everyday. I’m not saying every restaurant should cater to Celiacs, but the ones that are should be trained and at least know what they’re doing :/
I have been to Biaggi’s (they have one here in Peoria) but we don’t have an Outback. Next time I make it to Bloomington I’ll have to try “Take a Bite”! Skillet cookies sound AMAZING.
The only places I will go out to eat in Peoria (non-nationwide chains) are Alexander’s Steakhouse, Sushi-KO and Biaggi’s. I frequent Red Robin because I’ve NEVER gotten sick there and there’s so many choices :)
We also recently made the switch from Sam’s to Costco because of all the GF options they carry.
It’s a constant battle we all deal with everyday – but it’s slowly getting better.
I agree it’s a battle, but I’m glad that we are getting more options with every year.
Thanks for the recommendations, I’m definitely checking out Sushi-KO! I haven’t had Sushi in years! I’m also glad to hear about Alexander’s. It’s such a gamble going out to eat, especially after being glutened a few too many times. Thanks for the new restaurant options.
I’ve heard Costco has a lot of GF options. I’m going to have to check it out!
