Dear Dairy…

giving up dairy

See what I did there? Instead of Dear Diary, I cleverly inverted the two letters? I know…you don’t have to say it.

Dear Dairy…it’s been a great run. When I was a child, my 3 brothers and I would polish off a gallon of you every single day. \

I loved you in my homemade tortellini and cream sauce.

Roast beef and provolone sub? My favorite.

And who can forget all the cheeseburgers we shared together.

And those omelettes…oh my, don’t even get my started.

And finally, for the last few years, we’d start our day together at 5 am with our coffee.

But it’s time for us to part ways. It’s nothing personal, I assure you. It’s just that whenever we spend time together, I always end up feeling worse. And when that happens, it’s time to end the relationship and move on. You can even ask Dr. Phil.

And one final thing. It’s not your fault. It’s not your fault. It’s not your fault. (Picture Matt Damon in a cow outfit.) This one is all on Celiac. I thought giving up gluten would be enough, but my entire being tells me differently.

Take care…and be good to my kids!

  1. Interestingly enough i’ve always thought i have been lactose intolerant sense i recovered from a real bad phenomena back in 2003. About a month ago i got diagnosed with celiacs disease and was told this whole time they go hand in hand, that i was only noticing the symptoms of the dairy, but likely i got CD at that same time 9 years ago. My GI dr. said maybe in 6 months – 1 year i could slowly introduce dairy back into my diet once my intestines heal up. Weirdly though, goat products like feta cheese and goat cheese have never bothered me!

It’s not so bad going without. Love my Almond Milk. Don’t miss the fat that came with all the cheeses.

That being said, I fought it tooth and nail in the beginning.

  2. I’m finding similar things, Amanda. My naturopath (who has CD and been GF for 25 years) says that goat, sheep, and buffalo cheeses are OK but cow’s milk products are off. I’ve heard they have different types of lactose but haven’t done the research yet to confirm. I’m sure there are still some people who react to all, though. Fortunately it seems like I am not one of them. Am enjoying almond milk with coffee though!

Who I am. And who I'm not.

Who I am. And who I'm not.

I AM someone who's been gluten-free since 2007 due to a diagnosis of severe celiac disease. I'm someone who can steer you in the right direction when it comes to going gluten-free. And I'm someone who will always give you the naked truth about going gluten free.

I AM NOT someone who embraces this gluten-free craziness. I didn’t find freedom, a better life or any of that other crap when I got diagnosed. With all due respect to Hunter S. Thompson, I found fear and loathing of an unknown world. But if I can share my wisdom, tell my stories and make the transition easier on you, I’ve done my job.
