Gluten-Free Love Story: Happy Endings

gluten free relationship

This is Laura’s Gluten-Free Love Story…

January of 2011, I met my soul mate through a mutual friend in the music community. I had just ended a long-term relationship, and had absolutely no intention of dating anyone, let alone getting deeply involved. I had been gluten free since 2003, and believed that was enough of a barrier for anyone to want to be with me anyway. I assumed it was too much work.

I had met Brian at a weekly Jazz Jam I always attended and participated in. He was there the following week with information on which restaurants he could safely take me to, and was armed with all sorts of new knowledge he’d learned about gluten and celiac condition. I began to worry that I was in trouble.

For almost a year, we took turns treating each other to dinners at a 100% GF restaurant. We spent a lot of time getting to know each other, becoming dear friends. I kept threatening to set him up with a single friend. After several months, I realized there was no way I would want to let him go. We changed our relationship from “friends” to “life partners”.

He moved in with me, and went gluten free since I can’t safely be with someone who eats gluten. He had immediate health benefits from his new diet and found it actually made him ill if he accidentally ingested gluten. We suspect he is actually celiac, as one of his sons was recently tested and is now a diagnosed celiac.

Brian is a marvelous cook, and learned to cook all his dishes gluten free. I became so much healthier with him around. I was underweight when we met. Within a year of living together and eating his cooking, I am now back to a healthy weight and not nearly as susceptible to cross contamination. (It used to take me weeks to recover from the slightest exposure, even gluten in the air. Now I am fine after a day or two.)

He continues to be my biggest supporter in my music career, my health and my life. I am pleased to say we will marry in two days on Valentines Day.

Blessings,

Laura

PS I’ll send a wedding picture when we get them back:)

  1. Great love story! btw, I have a similar story so my husband did the genetic test. He is “High Risk”. He too is better w/o gluten, though never had an actual dx.

Who I am. And who I'm not.

Who I am. And who I'm not.

I AM someone who's been gluten-free since 2007 due to a diagnosis of severe celiac disease. I'm someone who can steer you in the right direction when it comes to going gluten-free. And I'm someone who will always give you the naked truth about going gluten free.

I AM NOT someone who embraces this gluten-free craziness. I didn’t find freedom, a better life or any of that other crap when I got diagnosed. With all due respect to Hunter S. Thompson, I found fear and loathing of an unknown world. But if I can share my wisdom, tell my stories and make the transition easier on you, I’ve done my job.
