5 quick (gluten-free) tips for Thanksgiving

Just a quick and easy post today. We’re all busy prepping for the kickoff of the holiday season tomorrow. Just don’t get too caught up in the festivities, especially if you’ve got celiac disease. Dangers lurk everywhere.

1. Don’t overeat. I don’t care if you have celiac, allergies, diabetes, gout, crabs or amnesia. STOP eating before you get too full. Your entire being will thank you for it.

2. Forget the stuffing. I know…I know. It’s the best part of Thanksgiving. Well, if you are gluten-free, it might not be, but still. And yes, there are somewhat healthy stuffings out there so by all means, if that’s you, do indulge. But for most of us, it’s bread, butter, broth, blah, blah, blah. Empty, empty calories. Yam it up instead.

3. Exercise. Yes, we all work our asses off. Yes, we all deserve some down time. But the average person puts on five pounds over the holidays. Don’t be average. Hit the gym or the pavement both Thursday and Friday.

4. Load up on veggies. You’ll most likely be eating all day; maybe even all weekend. Don’t eat just crap. Put out a plate of carrots, celery sticks and peppers with a side of hummus. It’s all good.

5. Be thankful! I know it’s hokey. But the older I get, the more thankful I am every single day for who and what I have in my life. If you go around the table saying your thanks, don’t say what everyone else will say (my family, my health, my iPhone). Dig deep. I’m sure you’ve got a lot to be thankful for, even if you’ve got celiac disease.

Have a great day!!

  1. I eat till I’m stuffed, because it’s a holiday, then take a LONG bike ride in the morning, after breakfast, before and after lunch, and before dinner.

Who I am. And who I'm not.

Who I am. And who I'm not.

I AM someone who's been gluten-free since 2007 due to a diagnosis of severe celiac disease. I'm someone who can steer you in the right direction when it comes to going gluten-free. And I'm someone who will always give you the naked truth about going gluten free.

I AM NOT someone who embraces this gluten-free craziness. I didn’t find freedom, a better life or any of that other crap when I got diagnosed. With all due respect to Hunter S. Thompson, I found fear and loathing of an unknown world. But if I can share my wisdom, tell my stories and make the transition easier on you, I’ve done my job.
