Nima, The Gluten Sensor
Nima is a portable sensor that tests liquid and solid foods for the presence of gluten in about two to three minutes and is now available in the U.S!.
Are you ever out and about and wondering if there’s gluten in those French Fries, or if that soup was thickened with a bit of flour? Curious to know if that sauce has traces of gluten in it? Nima allows you to test your food on the go, discreetly and easily. You can also sync, share and discover other test results with the Nima app.
“Before having Nima, travel was more stressful and felt like a game of chance for both my daughter and myself,” said Debbie Finn, a Nima pre-order customer who avoids gluten for health reasons. “There is nothing worse than getting ‘glutened’ when you’re out of town. Nima has become an important tool in helping us feel safer when traveling to new places and eating at new restaurants.”

Now Nima Works
Nima tests a sample of food on-the-go in three easy steps.
Step 1 – Place a pea-sized amount of food into a one-time-use capsule and screw on the cap.
Step 2 – Insert capsule into the device.
Step 3 – Press the power button and begin testing.
In about two to three minutes, Nima will display the test result – a “gluten found” wheat symbol if gluten is detected or a smile emoticon if the sample has less than 20 parts per million of gluten – the FDA guideline for gluten-free foods.
After testing, Nima syncs with your phone so you can share your test results with other Nima users with similar dietary habits on the Nima iOS app. You can also search for restaurants, see previous test results and find new recommendations nearby, giving you a growing list of friendly gluten-free options right at your fingertips!

Nima’s History and Our Beliefs
Shireen Yates and Scott Sundvor are the founders of of Nima and both have long struggled with various food allergies and sensitivities and were tired of always wondering if food is safe to eat. Born out of MIT, they built a company to bring clarity and trust back to the dinner table. Gluten is just the first of many things Nima will be testing for – tests for peanut and milk are already in development, with plans to expand to egg, soy, fish, shellfish, tree nuts and more.
