Gluten Free Vacation: Day 1: Smooth Landing

new-grist-beer

Bubble wrap is my new best friend.  You will all be happy to know that both me and my New Grist beer survived a van ride, a plane ride, a cab ride and a ferry ride. By the way, many thanks to the Continental baggage handlers for being so gentle with my luggage. Taking a sledgehammer to it would have been just as effective.

Day one of my gluten free vacation went off without a hitch. Door to door traveling time was twelve hours so a lot of prep needed to be done to make sure I had enough food for the duration. Not a problem. Had plenty of food in my backpack and a bloody mary on the plane induced a nice little nap to kill some time.

Upon arrival at our house, had a nice discussion with the chef about my restrictions. She seemed to get it pretty well….I think…I hope!!

She made my own appy: guacamole and sundried tomatoes on Mary’s Gone Crackers. Dinner was an awesome chicken dish with a pesto sauce (a bit nervous about that one…but it seemed to check out ok), rice and veggies. Dessert came out and as I was about to take a bite, she stopped me just in time and said there was flour in the sauce. Phew! That was a close one. Never a dull moment when it comes to celiac.

Let’s see what day 2 brings. See you tomorrow.

Who I am. And who I'm not.

Who I am. And who I'm not.

I AM someone who's been gluten-free since 2007 due to a diagnosis of severe celiac disease. I'm someone who can steer you in the right direction when it comes to going gluten-free. And I'm someone who will always give you the naked truth about going gluten free.

I AM NOT someone who embraces this gluten-free craziness. I didn’t find freedom, a better life or any of that other crap when I got diagnosed. With all due respect to Hunter S. Thompson, I found fear and loathing of an unknown world. But if I can share my wisdom, tell my stories and make the transition easier on you, I’ve done my job.
