My Foggy Award Concession Speech

Dude Note: To honor Celiac Awareness Month and to help raise awareness of our disease, I will be attempting 31 blog posts in 31 days. My goal is simple: to make most of them not suck. If you’ve got ideas for a good post or if you’d like to guest blog, by all means, contact me. Your input is more than welcome. And if you know anybody with celiac disease, give them some extra lovin’ this month. They deserve it.

After spending days locked in my room throwing an all-out tantrum for not winning the Foggy Award for Personality of the Year, I thought it would be the adult thing to do to be gracious in defeat.

So here goes my attempt at humility…

First off, I’d like to thank The Foggy Awards. It was an honor to be nominated but more importantly I thank you for bringing more awareness to celiac disease.

(How am I doing so far??)

Next, I’d like to offer my congratulations to the Gluten Free Girl for her victory. When I was first diagnosed, it turns out that her book was one of the first ones I received. And now here we are, 5+ years later, and our paths cross again.

With over 37,000 Facebook fans, I knew I was a long shot since I have 36,720 fewer fans than her.

I’d have to vote for myself at least 20,000 times to make it close.

And believe me I tried.

But after about 10,000 self-votes, my computer crashed and I developed severe hand cramps so I had to abandon my plan.

In all seriousness, her blog is awesome and her writing style is wonderful and if you haven’t checked her out, you should.

And I’d like to salute my fellow nominees, all quite deserving in their own right.

The Celiac Diva “dishes on all things gluten-free.” Her bubbly personality is contagious, she produces interesting, informative videos and she does so much for the gluten-free community.

The Gluten Free Mom provides advice on how to go gluten free and talks about “one woman’s rise from the depths of gluten-free despair to a place of downright enthusiasm.”

The Gluten Free Goddess (don’t you just love all of our pen names?) is all about recipes. But she just doesn’t list her recipes. She writes a story about each one. Great stuff.

Fab Grandma lives a gluten-free live in an RV and her blog is quite entertaining.

So to everyone who voted for me, I thank you both!

And to everyone who voted for somebody else…Mrs. Dude thanks you (she says I already have a little too much personality going on!)

See you at the awards next year.

  1. Thanks for writing such an awesome blog – you’re open and honest about what celiacs go through, not chirpy and “oh isn’t it great I can’t eat gluten”. You totally deserved to win!

  2. Hey, I voted for you too! Thanks for the mention. I still have no idea why I was nominated–sure, I live gluten free, but it is not the only thing I am, so not the only thing I write about. I am just a fat ol grandma!

  3. I’ve been gluten free for over a year and your blog was the first one that made me feel normal for a celiac. We do feel miserable at times and foggy. Thanks for that!

Who I am. And who I'm not.

Who I am. And who I'm not.

I AM someone who's been gluten-free since 2007 due to a diagnosis of severe celiac disease. I'm someone who can steer you in the right direction when it comes to going gluten-free. And I'm someone who will always give you the naked truth about going gluten free.

I AM NOT someone who embraces this gluten-free craziness. I didn’t find freedom, a better life or any of that other crap when I got diagnosed. With all due respect to Hunter S. Thompson, I found fear and loathing of an unknown world. But if I can share my wisdom, tell my stories and make the transition easier on you, I’ve done my job.
